Introduction of Microbiology - 01

Before we deal with the discipline of microbiology,it is better to recall what “biology” is.Biology is the scincetific study of living organisms.”Bio” means living organisms and “logy” means “study of”.These words are derived from Greek words.Micro means very
small which can not be seen with naked eye and must be viewed from a microscope.Hence, the word microbiology brings you the meaning of the study of very small living organisms.These very smallliving organism are called “micro organisms” or “microbes”.Accordingly,microbiology is a scientific discipline dealing with the study of micro-organism which require microscopic observation.In order to understand the science of microbiology and related practical applications for human wellbeing,it is necessary to study the groups of micro-organisms in the microbial world. Different categories of micro organisms are included in microbiology.There are: Viruses, bacteria, fungi, algae and protozoa.Out of these organisms,viruses are not regarded as living organisms or not considered to be cells.Therefore,viruses are some times referred to as infectious agents or infectious particles.Hence,in the taxonomy of the micro- organisms,viruses are placed in a different category.

The world surrounding human beings and animals is swarming with micro organisms – ; so much so,it is difficult to find a place free from micro organisms. Micro organisms exist everywhere on the earth. Accordingly as they are potentially every where,the micro organisms are said to be “ubiquitous”.Not all   micro organisms are harm full to humans or animals.Out of all the micro organisms only few are pathogenic.Only about3% of identified microbes may cause disease.The micro organisms which may be harmful to humans and animals are said to be “pathogens” while others who do not cause harm are called “ non pathogens”.
